Toronto’s Own Melanie Fiona Nominated For Her First Grammy

Melanie Fiona received her first Grammy nomination for best female R&B vocal performance for “It Kills Me.”  Here’s what she had to say:

“I cried the happiest tears of my life when I heard the news,” says Melanie Fiona. “This is something I have dreamed of my entire life. I am a new artist, and to be recognized by the Grammy committee as a nominee in the company of such talented and established artists is my highest honor. I truly feel like the little engine that could.”

Much love and success to you to Ms. Fiona.

Drake Snatches Two Grammy Nods

Drake is nominated for best rap song and best rap solo performance for the hit single Best I Ever Had .  At first, Drake didn’t even realize he was nominated.

“I have to say, you know, it’s definitely an honour. I haven’t even put out my first album,” he said. “Being a kid from Toronto, I’m just proud, man. I know my mom’s at home, buggin’ out. I’m just glad to be here.” – Drake

He’s up against some tough competition, but you gotta be proud of the Young Money artist. Drizzy’s first full album is expected to drop in the new year.

Shad – Compromise (New Video)

Spotlight – SHAD

Meet Shad K, a dope canadian hip hop artist. A lot of people may not know this, but his 2005 debut album When This Is Over was self made and financed with the money ($17,500) he won from 91.5 The Beat’s Rhythm of the Future talent competition during he was a student and undergraduate at Wilfrid Laurier University. He’s also an accomplished freestyler with the ability to drop flows at the drop of a hat.

In 2007, Shad was signed to Black Box Recordings and soon released his second album, The Old Prince in 2008. His style has been compared to K-OS and Common, all having a laid back swagger and precise delivery. One of my personal favourite tracks is, “I Don’t Really Like To” from his latest album. K'naan - Troubadour

K'naan - Troubadour

K’naan’s new album drops tomorrow (February 24, 2009) in a music store near you. The Somali-Canadian rapper has some notable skills when it comes to his delivery. This dude could be signed to Shady/Aftermath today and he could show them what’s good.

When I first him heard the track “Strugglin”, I couldn’t help but notice that K’naan sounds like Eminem for some strange reason. But apparently I wasn’t the only one, because he’s been compared to Em throughout his career. But the subject content isn’t even close. K’naan talks about his experiences growing up in a Third world country, which is a far cry from what most people are used to. This album entitled Troubadour will be K’naan’s third ablum to date. I would cop it. Check out K’naan’s myspace at
